What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof coffee is a high fat beverage invented by Dave Asprey after a trip to Tibet where he was introduced to a yak butter tea.

When he returned to the US he began experimenting with adding grass-fed butter to his coffee and eventually developed the drink he, and now the world, refers to as “bulletproof coffee”.

Why We Love Dairy-Free Bulletproof Coffee

There are a number of reasons I love making this dairy-free bulletproof coffee but the main reasons I keep coming back to it include:

  • Satiated. I usually drink my cup of coffee and it keeps cravings at bay.
  • Fuels a morning workout. Depending on the morning, I am able to get a run or swim in before breakfast and having a little extra fat from the MCT and coconut oil really helps fuel the workout.
  • Great flavor. A slight hint of coconut and a sprinkle of cinnamon give this coffee a delightful flavor.

What Makes this Bulletproof Coffee Vegan?

Coconut oil. Typical bulletproof coffee recipes call for grass-fed butter or ghee. To make this recipe vegan I swapped the butter for coconut oil.

Helpful Kitchen Tools

When it comes to making this simple vegan recipe from bulletproof coffee there are a few ingredients or tools you might want to have on hand in the kitchen.

  • MCT Oil– This ingredient is what takes your regular cup of coffee and makes it “bulletproof”.
  • Handheld Frother– Used to blend the coconut oil and MCT oil into your coffee for a smooth and enjoyable beverage.
  • Coffee Mug– I like using a mug that won’t be scratched up if I used the metal end of the handheld frother in the mug.

Can you add creamer to bulletproof coffee?

This depends on your intended purpose for bulletproof coffee.

For an intermittent fasting diet you would probably not want to add creamer to decrease the overall calories your coffee would contain.

For Keto based diets you might consider adding plant-based cream or an unsweetened creamer like Nut Pods.

If you aren’t too worried about calorie restriction a tablespoon or two of your favorite creamer may just add the boost you are looking for in your morning cup of joe.

Taking Bulletproof Coffee on the Go!

Recently, my husband has been taking this bulletproof coffee to go. Since he brews his coffee at work he takes a little storage container with the pre-measured MCT oil, coconut oil, and a dash of cinnamon.

At work he adds the oil mixture to the bottom of his coffee cup, brews the coffee on top, then gives it a little froth with a handheld frother.
