Ingredients You’ll Need
For this recipe you will need just two simple, pantry-staple ingredients:
- Non-dairy milk– I have used just about every non-dairy milk when it comes to making buttermilk. I recommend using an unflavored and unsweetened option to avoid changing the final flavor of your baked good.
- Apple cider vinegar– Adds a tang to the non-dairy milk to help give it that fermented flavor associated with traditional buttermilk.
Step-by-Step Directions for Vegan Buttermilk
- Pour 1 cup of non-dairy milk into a liquid measuring cup.
- Remove 1 Tablespoon of non-dairy milk from the measuring cup.
- Pour 1 Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into the non-dairy milk and stir to combine.
- Allow the mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes to create a vegan buttermilk.
Milks for Dairy-Free Buttermilk
There are a number of different non-dairy milks on the market and I have used quite a few of them over the years to make vegan buttermilk. Here are a few that work well in this recipe.
- Unsweetened, un-flavored almond milk
- Oat milk
- Flax milk
- Coconut milk – Be sure you want to add the flavor of coconut to what you are baking before using coconut milk.
Uses for Vegan Buttermilk
There are some recipes that are just better with buttermilk. For starters, it tenderizes baked goods leaving them soft and fluffy.
