When we moved to Connecticut, I knew there were things that would not be the same. One of those things was a good tortilla. Soft, warm, melt in your mouth, cradles your food and never gives up, tortilla. HEB was my go to source for the best flour tortillas at home.

For the first year in the Nutmeg State, I lived in denial. If someone was coming up from Texas they had to bring HEB tortillas. When I went home to visit, my suitcase would be packed with tortillas. I once had my bag searched at the airport because there were so many tortillas they created a concerning image going through x-ray. The man searching my bag judged slightly but I told him if he took my tortillas we would have a problem.

As fate would have it, I am lucky enough to live next door to a fellow Texan. Not only is she from the Lone Star State, she’s an incredible person who grinds her own flour, grows her own vegetables, and teaches her children how to do the same. So when she shared her homemade flour tortilla recipe I knew it would be good. Once you make your first batch you will be just as glad she shared.

Plop eggs into these for the best breakfast tacos. Toss some taco meat in them for a perfect Taco Tuesday. Or slather some vegan butter on and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar for a sweet treat.

Dairy-Free Changes for Flour Tortillas

This recipe is naturally dairy-free. Here are some ways to add flavor to the tortillas without adding additional dairy.

  • Get fat from a local Spanish food market and use it in place of vegetable oil. If you have the ability to visit a Spanish market I promise it won’t disappoint.
  • Try melted vegan butter in place of the vegetable oil.

How to Make Homemade Flour Tortillas

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Baking Powder
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Water

Step-by-Step Directions for Flour Tortillas

  • Mix the flour, salt, and baking powder in the bowl of a standing mixer with a dough hook attachment.
  • In a liquid measuring cup combine the oil and the water.
  • With the mixer on a slow speed, slowly pour the oil/water mixture into the bowl. Increase the speed and mix together on medium-high until combined.
  • Turn the dough out onto the counter and divide into 16 equal pieces. To do this, I shape the dough into a square and divide into 4 smaller squares. Then I divide each of those squares into 4 more squares.
  • Next roll the dough squares into balls. To do this, I pinch the 4 corners together in my right hand and roll the dough in my left hand.
  • Place the dough, pinch side down, onto a plate. Cover with a clean dishtowel and allow to rest for at least a half hour.
  • Heat a non-stick pan on medium high heat. On a very lightly floured surface roll out the dough balls into circles. It is ok if your first few balls do not come out as perfect circles, the more character, the better.
  • Put the rolled out dough on the skillet and allow to sit for about 30 seconds (until it puffs up, or browns slightly) then flip and allow to sit on the other side for 30 seconds. Remove from heat and put on a plate covered with a clean dishtowel.
  • Repeat until all dough rounds have been cooked into your beautiful, homemade tortillas.

  • Don’t stress about getting a perfect circle!

Recipe Notes

*There are many different oils you can use for this recipe. Melted vegan butter would work and if you really want to go out on a limb try lard.

Make ahead tip:

You can make the tortillas ahead and stick them in the freezer. Take out as many as you want and warm them in oven on low or in the microwave for about 10 seconds. They last for about 3 months.Â
