Vegan Chocolate Almond Butter Lactation Balls

Two under two is no joke. There is a level of energy required to keep up with your toddler and a whole different level of energy needed for a newborn.

While we are completely blessed and have a baby who sleeps fabulously through the night (thank you Moms on Call), the energy needed to nurse and keep my milk supply up and running for her keeps me hydrating and fueling up throughout the day.

Frequent meals and many energy bites have been my saving grace. I have limited time to sit down and eat plus often need to be eating one handed.

Why We Love These Chocolate Almond Lactation Bites

Aside from the chocolate loaded flavor, here are just a few more reasons we (yes, my husband eats these too) love these chocolate almond lactation balls.

  • No-bake. Perfect for keeping my toddler from touching a hot oven, these snacks whip up without any baking.
  • Vegan recipe. Made with simple, filling, and vegan ingredients, this recipe is perfect for just about everyone.
  • One-handed snack. I mentioned two under two right?? Everything I eat is on the go (unless the toddler is sitting down to a meal too).

How to Make Chocolate Almond Lactation Bites

Milk Boosting Ingredients

This recipe contains 3 different ingredients known to help boost milk production.

  • Brewer’s Yeast (Amazon affiliate link)–  Packed with iron, protein, and vitamin B this superfood is a galactagogue – Greek for a substance that promotes lactation.
  • Old-Fashioned Oats– Iron rich oatmeal helps promote the production of breast milk.
  • Ground Flax Seed– Made from ground flaxseeds, this contains phytoestrogens (AKA dietary estrogens) which are structurally similar to estrogen produced by the body and have the potential to have effects similar to estrogen.

Additional Ingredients:

In addition to the milk boosting ingredients of brewer’s yeast, old-fashioned oats, and ground flax seed, this recipe also contains:

  • Almond butter
  • Maple syrup
  • Water
  • Vanilla
  • Salt
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

Directions for Vegan Chocolate Almond Energy Bites

  • Make flax egg: In a medium mixing bowl, stir together ground flax with water and let sit 5 minutes.
  • Add remaining ingredients: After 5 minutes, add 1 cup old-fashioned oats, ½ cup almond butter, ¼ cup maple syrup, 1 teaspoon vanilla, ⅛ teaspoon salt, 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder, 1 Tablespoon brewers yeast, and ¼ cup mini chocolate chips.
  • Stir the ingredients together with a rubber spatula until combined.
  • Chill: Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • Scoop the lactation balls mixture with a 1.5 Tablespoon cookie scoop and roll into balls.
  • Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.

Dairy-Free and Vegan Swaps

To make this a dairy-free and vegan treat there are a few swaps to keep in mind:

  • Cocoa powder– Cocoa powder is traditionally dairy-free, be sure you are selecting cocoa powder instead of instant cocoa mix which might contain dairy.
  • Maple Syrup– Used to sweeten the lactation bites.
  • Chocolate Chips– I used Enjoy Life Mini Chocolate Chips (Amazon affiliate link) to make these a vegan treat.

Additional Substitutions for Lactation Bites

If you are looking to make other changes to this recipe, here are a few simple swaps you can make.

  • Replace the almond butter with sun butter for a nut free option.
  • Swap the maple syrup with honey* to sweeten. This is not a vegan friendly swap.

STORING AND FREEZING HEALTHY LACTATION BITES

Once rolled and ready, here are the best ways to store your vegan lactation bites.

  • Refrigerator- Keep chilled in an airtight container or ziplock bag for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.
  • Freezer– For longer storage or to meal prep these lactation bites before your due date follow the recipe and roll into balls. Store the balls in a freezer-safe container or ziplock bag for up to 3 months.
  • Thawing– When you are ready to dive into these healthy snack bites, simply remove the desired amount from the freezer and transfer to the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
