Rich and creamy, this dairy free creamy garlic orzo pasta recipe comes together in 30 minutes for a simple side dish or meatless main that will steal the show. Made with pantry staple ingredients, you can easily whip up a pot of this vegan pasta tonight!

There is just something about a warm and comforting bowl of creamy pasta that gives you all the cozy feels. Unfortunately for me creamy pasta dishes have also come with all of the crampy feels too.
This is why making a creamy pasta recipe without any dairy was a must for me. Bonus? It whips up in under 30 minutes with ingredients you probably already have in the pantry.
Dairy free and vegan, this flavorful orzo pasta recipe is an easy side dish to add to your dinner menu or a meatless main that you can scarf down any night of the week.
Why You Will Love This Vegan Garlic Orzo
Honestly, there are so many reasons I love this orzo pasta but my favorite thing about it is the fresh garlic flavor. Some other reasons I think you will love this orzo dish include:
- Ready in 30 minutes. Makes it the perfect weeknight dish.
- Pantry staple ingredients. You probably have everything you need on hand to whip it up.
- Creamy without dairy. No creams or cheeses needed.
- Makes a solid side dish or meatless main.
What makes this orzo creamy?
There are a few key things that help make this a rich and creamy sauce.
- Vegan butter + flour. The butter is a rich start the the sauce and helps create the roux with the flour.
- Oat milk. This gives the sauce a creamy base.
- Pasta water. Loosens the sauce as needed while also providing starch that helps it come together.
HOW TO MAKE CREAMY GARLIC ORZO PASTA
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Orzo pasta– The small rice shaped pasta cooks quickly and adds a risotto like feel to the dish.
- Plant-based butter– Melted to help make the roux.
- Onion– For a little aromatic flavor.
- Garlic– Adds in all the garlicky goodness you want out of a garlic pasta recipe.
- Flour– Creates the roux and helps thicken the cream sauce.
- Oat milk– Gives the sauce a creamy touch without overpowering in flavor.
- Salt + Pepper– For flavor.
- Lemon Juice– Adds a bright splash of flavor.
- Basil– For a fresh finish to the dish.
- Reserved pasta water– Helps loosen up the garlic cream sauce.
Ingredient Substitutions
There are a few swaps or omissions you can make with this dish that will still maintain flavor.
- Oat milk– You can sub in Califia Farm’s Heavy Cream Alternative in place of the oat milk for a rich and creamy sauce.
- Onion– You can omit the onion if it’s not your thing, my kids prefer it without onion.
- Basil– In place of fresh basil you can use up to 2 teaspoons of dried basil.

Directions for Creamy Garlic Orzo Pasta
- Cook the pasta: To begin, cook orzo pasta according to the package directions. Reserve about 1/2 cup of the pasta water before draining the orzo when it’s done and set aside.
- Melt butter: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt vegan butter.
- Cook onion and then garlic: Add diced onion and cook for about 3-5 minutes until translucent. Next, add minced or microplaned garlic and stir until fragrant.
- Create roux: With a whisk, add flour into the pan until completely mixed in. Cook for about a minute.

- Add oat milk: Next, slowly whisk in the oat milk, a little at a time until completely incorporated. Add salt and pepper. Stir and cook until thick, about 2 minutes.
- Add remaining ingredients: Finally add lemon juice, the cooked orzo pasta, and fresh chopped basil. If the cream sauce is a little too thick, add the reserved pasta water, about 1 Tbsp at a time.

Can I Use Another Dairy Free Milk?
I have tested this recipe with oat milk, coconut milk, almond milk, and a few different dairy free heavy cream alternatives. My top 2 choices for this sauce are currently:
- Oat milk– This is my top choice for the recipe for a few reasons. It is probably already in your refrigerator and it makes a thick creamy sauce that won’t separate.
- Califia Farms Heavy Cream Alternative– While working on my heavy cream alternatives post, I tested this sauce with each heavy cream alternative and found this one to work well in the sauce.
What milk did not work well for creamy garlic orzo?
- Coconut milk– The coconut flavor overpowered the garlic flavor. While the sauce was thick and creamy it just didn’t have the flavor I was trying to achieve.
- Almond milk– Sauce didn’t thicken well.
- Country Crock Plant Cream– This was surprising to me because I love Country Crock’s plant cream alternative but the sauce split after the cooking was complete.
How to Keep the Sauce Creamy
There are a few things to keep in mind while you are cooking this creamy pasta dish that will help your sauce turn out decadent and creamy every time.
- Don’t rush the roux. Make sure the flour full incorporates into the melted butter and thickens before adding the oat milk.
- Add the oat milk gradually. I like to pour in 1/2 cup additions and whisk them in before adding the next pour.
- Reserve your pasta water before draining the orzo. The starchy water will help the sauce stay creamy.
- Only add 1 Tablespoon of pasta water at a time. This will help the water incorporate into the sauce without overwhelming it.

Storing and Reheating
This vegan pasta recipe is truly best on the day it is made but if you have left-overs and want to store and reheat them here are my tips.
- Remember that the orzo will keep absorbing liquids while it stays in the fridge.
- Place it in a refrigerator safe container for up to 5 days.
- When you are ready to reheat you might want to add a splash of oat milk to thin out the sauce and heat in 30 second intervals.
