This easy, no-bake vegan 7 layer dip is the perfect addition to any gathering, big or small. Made with 7 unique layers this fresh and filling dip is easy to make, dairy-free, and absolutely addictive! Grab a chip and let’s dig in!
I am all about a good chip dip. From fresh guacamole to Texas caviar, you just can’t go wrong with a fresh dip for a salty chip. So when a dip comes along that combines not 1 or 2 delicious items but SEVEN layers of chip dipping deliciousness, you know I am here for it!
7 layer dip gets its name from the simple fact that it is a dip that has 7 unique layers, each made with a fresh and delicious ingredient. This is the ultimate snack for the dip lovers in your life. It’s perfect for football games, Cinco de mayo celebrations, summer pool parties, and more!
What is in a traditional 7 Layer dip?
These layers often vary in their order but the most consistent recipes include:
- Refried Beans
- Salsa
- Sour Cream
- Guacamole
- Shredded Cheese
- Olives
- Diced Tomatoes
Dairy-Free Changes
Turning this addictive dip from a dairy-filled to a dairy-free and vegan option took 2 main swaps.
- Sour Cream- Making this a vegan dip meant using a dairy-free sour cream alternative. For this recipe, I used Kite Hill Sour Cream Alternative. I’ve previously used Kite Hill’s cream cheese alternative for my Everything Bagel Pigs in a Blanket and knew their quality to be good. The sour cream was spot on for this 7 layer dip!
- Cheese- I opted to ditch the vegan cheese shreds for this recipe and replaced the cheese layer with shredded lettuce for a light and refreshing finish.
What are the layers in vegan 7 layer dip?
I followed most of the frequently used layers but made a few preferential changes. The layers include:
- Refried Beans
- Salsa
- Homemade Guacamole
- Sour Cream, mixed with taco seasoning
- Shredded Lettuce
- Green Onion
- Diced Tomato
How to Make Vegan 7 Layer Dip
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how quickly it is to put together. If you use canned refried beans you are looking at getting this vegan dip ready in under 15 minutes making it perfect for a last-minute addition to your party menu!
Ingredients for 7 Layer Dip
- Refried Beans- You can use homemade or canned. For ease and simplicity, I simply used a can of refried beans.
- Salsa- Pick your favorite jarred salsa, you will probably only use about 1/2 cup so save the rest for additional chip dipping.
- Guacamole- Homemade guacamole or store-bought will work just fine. I went with my homemade guacamole recipe.
- Sour Cream- I used Kite Hill brand sour cream alternative and mixed it with a taco seasoning blend.
- Shredded Lettuce- Adds a light and refreshing finish to the dip.
- Green Onion- Chopped about 2 stalks of green onion to garnish the top.
- Diced tomato- One seeded and diced Roma tomato works perfectly.
Directions
- Start by selecting the container you will be using to serve the 7 layer dip. I went with my Pyrex 6-Cup Rectangle Food Storage Container so I could build the layers in the same container I would store leftovers in.
- At the base of your serving dish, spread the refried beans in an even layer.
- Pour about 1/2 cup salsa over the refried beans and spread into an even layer. Add additional salsa if it does not cover the whole refried bean layer.
- Next, scoop the guacamole and spread it over the layer of salsa.
- Set the serving dish aside and in the container of sour cream add 1/2 tablespoon chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 teaspoon oregano, 1/4 teaspoon onion seasoning, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Stir to mix the spices into the sour cream.
- Pour the seasoned sour cream over the guacamole and spread into an even layer.
- Top the sour cream layer with a single layer of shredded lettuce, about 1/4-1/2 cup.
- Sprinkle the shredded lettuce layer with diced green onion.
- Finish it off with diced Roma tomatoes.
- Optional- chill 1 hour before serving to allow all of the flavor to soak in.
Alternative Layers
So here’s the deal y’all, I am not here to tell you what you can and can’t put in your 7 layer dip. In fact, I’m not going to limit you to how many layers you can include in this addictive dip. If you want to go rogue and make this an all-out layer fest… be my guest! Here are a few alternative layers you can add to this dip.
- Sliced olives- not my cup of tea but they are in the original recipe for a reason.
- Shredded vegan cheese
- Diced or pickled jalapeños
- Cilantro
- Red onion
- Pico de gallo- could be in place of the salsa or as an addition at the top
Serving Suggestions
The most common thing to serve with this vegan 7 layer dip is a bag of tortilla chips. Some other things you can serve with it include:
- Fritos, original
- Beanfields Nacho Bean Chips
- Siete Food Lime Tortilla Chips
