These delicious little pigs in a blanket came about pretty innocently… it started with a sale. Lil’ smokies were 2 for 5 at Kroger and I have a tendency to pick up extra things when they are a two-fer. So I grabbed the lil’ smokies and threw them in the freezer.

About a month later I started thinking I needed to do something with these lil’ smokies. I figured the safest bet was pigs in a blanket but I really had no reason to make pigs in a blanket (not saying you need a reason, just that it helps). Once I had decided the route of wrapping these lil piggies in a flaky pastry coat I thought it might help to dress them up and since I am always down for a good breakfast or brunch food I figured everything bagel and some cream cheese would be the way to go.

With a dollop of dairy-free cream cheese and a lil’ smokie tucked nicely inside the pastry, a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning on the outside takes this from good to oh my goodness, pass me another!

How to Make Everything Bagel Pigs in a Blanket

This is what I, and Sandra Lee, would call a semi-homemade recipe*. I am merely the assembler of the goods everything else has been done for me, and for that I am grateful.

*Upon fact checking this statement, semi-homemade cooking involves 70% pre-made ingredients with 30% fresh ingredients so I’m not really sure this fits… but I think I’m going to tell myself it’s semi-homemade and roll with it, ya know?

Ingredients

Crescent Rolls- Original style crescent rolls cut in half down the middle. Be sure to check the label to ensure the package you are selecting is in fact dairy-free.
Cream Cheese- Dairy-free cream cheese, I used Kite Hill in this recipe and loved it’s creamy texture.
Lil’ Smokies- One package of these porkers should do the trick.
Everything Bagel Seasoning- Everything that is good and holy in the breakfast world packed into one beautiful seasoning blend.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Open the package of crescent rolls, carefully, and unroll. Cut the rolls into half, vertically, to make two thin long triangular dough strips.

Dollop 1/2 teaspoon of dairy-free cream cheese on the wide end of the crescent dough and spread about halfway down the dough. Place a lil smoky on the wide end and roll up!

Sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning.

Bake 20-22 minutes, until golden brown. Remove from oven and serve with extra DF cream cheese and everything bagel seasoning.

Dairy-Free Changes to Everything Bagel Pigs in a Blanket

Here’s what you need to check out to make sure this snack is perfectly dairy-free:

Pick a dairy-free cream cheese for the filling. I have found Kite Hill to be the best dairy-free cream cheese substitute for me. It’s creamy with a nice tang.
Check your crescent roll label. No two are created equal and even within the same brand you will find some that are made with butter and others made without. Just read the label and make sure you are selecting on without milk, butter, dairy, etc. You know the drill.

Can you make these pigs in a blanket in advance?

Yes. There are two ways you can prep these piggies in advance.

Option 1: Make and bake them according to the recipe directions. Allow the everything bagel pigs in a blanket to come to room temperature and them stick in a freezer safe container. Freeze for up to 3 months until ready to make and bake.

To prep after freezing, remove from freezer and allow to come to room temperature. Bake at 350°F for roughly 10 minutes or microwave in 30 second intervals until they are the desired temperature.

Option 2: Make the pigs in a blanket but do not bake them. Instead freeze them on a baking sheet and then transfer to a freezer safe container. When you are ready to prepare them, remove from the freezer and allow to come to room temperature. Bake at 350°F for 20-22 minutes or until golden brown.
