Miyoko’s Liquid Mozzarella Review

Miyoko’s Pourable Plant Milk Mozzarella (Liquid Mozzarella) is a vegan alternative for mozzarella cheese. Read on to learn some of the pros, cons, and uses for this pourable mozzarella in my personal review of this vegan liquid cheese.

With the growing number of plant-based alternatives on the market I have started to branch out from my tried and true classics to see if any of these products stack up.

In my last review, I looked at Country Crock’s Plant Cream and found it to be an excellent substitute for heavy whipping cream in both sweet and savory recipes.

This month, I am looking at Miyoko’s Pourable Plant Milk Mozzarella to see if it lives up to the hype and how we can use it in our everyday dairy-free lives.

Please note that these are not products sent to me or items I will earn any commissions on for the review. Simply put, this is a dairy-free product I tried, liked, and could see myself using time and again.

What is Miyoko’s Pourable Plant Milk Mozzarella?

Miyoko’s has been a part of the plant-based movement since the 1990’s making plant-based cheeses, vegan butters, and dairy-free cream cheeses along the way.

In 2021 the company launched their pourable plant milk mozzarella and the world has never been the same.

As the name suggests, this product is a liquid mozzarella replacement that you can pour on top of pizza, subs, pasta and more!

This vegan liquid cheese bakes, bubbles, and stretches just like traditional mozzarella leaving you with a simple plant-based substitute for recipes needing a mozzarella topping.

What I like about Miyoko’s Pourable Plant Milk Mozzarella

There are a number of things I liked about this product. Some of the top reasons I have procured this liquid mozzarella numerous times include:

  • Easy to use. Simply pour and bake to get a delicious cheese topped finish.
  • Made with simple ingredients. Simple plant based ingredients make up this cheese alternative so I don’t feel like there are too many processed items.
  • Decent shelf-life before opening. The product typically lasts about 3 months without opening so it’s great for stocking up on a few bottles when it goes on sale.

But what about it’s quality as a cheese alternative? I’m glad you asked!

  • Looks like cheese. Unlike some dairy-free cheeses I have tried, this one at least melts like mozzarella when it bakes.
  • Has the mouth feel of cheese. When you bite into this plant milk mozzarella after it has baked onto it’s dish, it pulls and stretches like cheese.
  • No strange flavors. The cheese didn’t have an unusual smell or flavor after baking.

What I didn’t Like about Miyoko’s Plant Milk Mozzarella

There aren’t too many things I didn’t like about this vegan mozzarella replacement. Here are a few items you might want to keep in mind when deciding if this cheese alternative is right for you:

  • Clumps when it pours. I found it was easier to “pour” after dumping into a bowl and spooning on top of the dish.
  • Short shelf-life after opening. Like most dairy-free products it lasts about 14 days after opening.
  • Might need to use more than suggested. For a thick cheesy finish I used more than the suggested amount.
  • Relatively expensive. Also like most vegan cheese alternatives it’s relatively expensive running about $6 a bottle (at least where I live).
  • Must be baked. The cheese is not one you would put on a Charcuterie Board. It’s best used baking on top or inside something else.
  • No flavor. While the cheese didn’t taste weird, it didn’t really have much flavor to impart to the dish it topped.

Uses for Miyoko’s Pourable Plant Milk Mozzarella

As mentioned above, Miyoko’s liquid mozzarella is best served on top of or inside another dish. Some of the ways I have used this dairy-free cheese alternative include:

Final Thoughts and Reflections on Miyoko’s Pourable Plant Milk Mozzarella

Overall I had a positive experience using this product and found that the pros outweigh the cons. It’s simple and works well.

The next time I buy a bottle I plan to use it to cover a cheese-less pizza from a local pizza joint and bake it on top.
