Lizzy’s Oreo Turkey Cookies
Last Updated on October 31, 2024 by Annie
Oreo Turkey Cookies are a simple, no-bake treat perfect for Thanksgiving Day! Made entirely dairy-free, this Oreo turkey version uses Oreos, sun cups, candy corn, and a little frosting for a festive treat that’s almost too cute to eat.
Every Thanksgiving, my cousin Lizzy makes the most adorable turkey cookies from Oreos. Some years she would make them on location and other years she would show up with them pre-made.
Honestly, how she transported these adorable Oreo turkeys made from classic Oreos, candy corn, Whoppers, and red hots might be the real lesson to be learned here.
With Thanksgiving just a day away, my oven not functioning properly, and all of my family’s Thanksgiving plans taking place 1200 miles away, I decided to take on Lizzy’s Thanksgiving Oreo Turkeys for a little trip down memory road.
Why We Love these Oreo Turkey Cookies
If these adorable turkey faces aren’t enough of a reason to make a batch of these this year, here are a few key reasons you might want to reconsider.
- No Bake. These cookies are more like a craft than a traditional recipe and involve pre-made ingredients leaving the oven open for other treats.
- Great for kids. Having made these as a kid myself, these turkey cookies from Oreos are the perfect Thanksgiving day activity for kids to make.
- Decorative and delicious. These little cookies serve as both a decoration as well as a treat to be enjoyed.
Dairy-Free Changes to Oreo Turkeys
Two main ingredients keep these turkey cookies deliciously dairy-free.
- Replace the malted milk balls. If I’m being honest the Whoppers were always the weakest link when it came to these Oreo turkey cookies.
- Replace them with a Free2b Sun cup mini to keep the recipe inclusive of those with nut allergies.
- Use a dairy-free frosting. Many commercially available frostings are made dairy-free. Be sure to check the ingredient list to confirm you are selecting a dairy-free variety.
- Here are a few different chocolate frostings that are made dairy-free:
How to Make Oreo Turkey Cookies
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Oreo Cookies– I like to use the classic Oreo but Double Stuffed Oreos could also do the trick.
- Chocolate Frosting– Be sure to pick a dairy-free brand, I used Pillsbury’s Milk Chocolate Frosting for this recipe.
- Candy Corn– Check to make sure your preferred candy corn is made dairy-free. I used Brach’s original candy corn for these cuties.
- Free2b Sun Cups Mini– These help make the adorable faces on the Oreo turkey.
- Candy Eyes– For a little extra detail.
Step-by-Step Directions for Oreo Turkeys
- Twist the top off one Oreo cookie to separate the frosted side of the Oreo from the unfrosted side.
- Frost: Then, using an offset spatula, frost the unfrosted side with chocolate frosting.
- Place sunbutter cup: On the bottom edge of the chocolate frosted side place a Free2b sunbutter cup mini in the middle with the small side down. (This allows more room for the candy corn pieces to be tucked behind it).
- Add candy corn: Next, place 5 candy corn pieces on top of the chocolate frosted side. Tip side down and orange side up to look like the feathers of a turkey.
- Attach 2 eyes to the Free2b sun cup using chocolate frosting.
- Stand the turkey up: Next use some of the chocolate frosting to attach the turkey upright to the iced side of the Oreo and refrigerate to set.
Helpful Oreo Turkey Cookie Tips
I would suggest making a small bag of chocolate frosting to pipe on the eyes as well as piping the chocolate base for the turkey cookies.
I would also suggest making these cookies in steps instead of making a whole turkey at a time. For example:
- Remove all of the tops.
- Frost all 12 unfrosted sides.
- Place all 12 sun butter cups on the chocolate iced side.
- Add candy corn to each chocolate frosted top.
- ETC.
Helpful Kitchen Tools
When you decide to make these delicious and adorable Oreo turkey cookies, here are a few kitchen tools you might find helpful.
- Offset Spatula– Used to spread the chocolate frosting on the unfrosted side of the Oreo.
- Candy Eyes– For the eyes on the turkey. Truth be told, I used the leftover eyes from the chocolate dipped Halloween graham crackers.
Storing and Transporting Oreo Turkeys
These adorable turkey cookies are a little precarious when you transport them, here are my best tips for getting them to your Thanksgiving gatherings in one piece.
- Store– I would suggest keeping these turkey cookies in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- Transporting– Using a cupcake holder will help keep these turkey cookies from sliding into each other while you transport them to your holiday gatherings.
