I have been making quite a few Starbucks inspired coffees at home lately and with good reason. There are only two Starbucks locations where I live, one of them being located inside of the Barnes and Noble.

The second location is actually quite close to my house and I probably drive by it at least 5 times a day but there is always a line wrapping around the building and into the parking lot.

With 3 hours in my day where my toddlers are off at school the last thing I want to spend that time doing is waiting 10 minutes in the drive-thru line to get a $7 coffee. Especially when we have a perfectly good espresso maker at home and a well stocked kitchen.

What is a Shaken Espresso?

In March of 2021, Starbucks launched their first non-dairy shaken espresso, the Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso. Since then they have expanded their line to include seasonal varieties like apple crisp and hazelnut.

A shaken espresso is one of those recipes where the name truly tells you exactly what you are getting in the end. This coffee beverage comes together simply by shaking the espresso with brown sugar and ice.

Some variations have all of the ingredients shaken together while others simply shake the espresso and sugar. I think it’s up to you how you shake it up, but fore me I prefer to pour the oat milk over.

Why We Love this Oat Milk Shaken Espresso

Oh my caffeinated goodness could there be anything more delicious than a sweet frothy iced latte made in less than 5 minutes with just 4 ingredients?

  • Cost efficient. While you might argue the cost of an espresso maker is more than a Starbucks drink, I counter with… you can simply use drip coffee if you don’t have an espresso maker.
  • Less sugar. The standard Starbucks recipe called for 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar, I cut it in half as a personal preference.
  • Ready in 5 minutes or less. Its as simple as brew, shake, and pour.

How this Shaken Espresso is Different

With the oat milk shaken espresso already being dairy-free an vegan I am sure you are wondering how we updated the recipe to make it our own.

As previously mentioned I decreased the amount of sugar to the shaken espresso from 2 Tablespoons to 1 Tablespoon.

Some recipes also included making your own brown sugar simple syrup and honestly I am too lazy for that and felt like the hot espresso shaken with brown sugar dissolved perfectly.
