Mooala Review

Mooala is a plant-based milk line with almond, oat, and banana milk varieties. Read about the nutritional information, a general taste test, and what we like and dislike about these simple ingredient plant based milk alternatives.

After moving back to Texas in 2025 I have happily settled into the routine of being an H-E-B shopper yet again. While strolling the large and well cleaned aisles of the Texas based grocery store I stumbled upon a new to me milk alternative, Mooala.

The adorable Koala first caught my eye. The short and simple list of ingredients had me interested. But it was the unique option of “banana milk” that had me sold. After picking up a set of their milk alternative product line I set out to find how this brand stacks up.

Please note that these are not products sent to me or items I will earn any commissions on for the review. Simply put, this is a dairy-free product I tried, liked, and could see myself using time and again.

What is Mooala?

Created in 2012, Mooala is a plant-based milk brand with a variety of flavors. The founder of Mooala, Jeff Richards, sought to create a dairy-free and nut-free option to milk that didn’t have the sugars or gums typically found in plant-based milks.

The first flavor Jeff created was Banana Milk. Later expanding the line to include almond and oat milk varieties. The Mooala line of products are:

  • Organic
  • Dairy-Free
  • Kosher
  • Gluten-Free

Mooala Organic Banana Milk

A glass with a serving of Mooala banana milk with some bananas to the left and a yellow carton of banana milk to the right.

As the first variety offered by the Mooala line, I thought it fitting to test the banana milk first. Mooala offers Original, Chocolate, and Strawberry banana milk in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. They also make vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry shelf-stable banana milk options.

For this review I focused on the Original Banana Milk.

When you pour a glass of the Organic Banana Milk you are sampling a product made from:

  • Filtered Water
  • Organic Banana
  • Organic Sunflower Seeds
  • 2% or less of: Calcium and potassium blend, monk fruit juice concentrate, gellan gum, and organic cinnamon.

This no sugar added banana milk is also:

  • Nut free
  • Dairy free
  • Gluten free
  • Kosher Parve

It’s also important to note that the banana milk includes a 7-10 day shelf life after opening. The carton also had a best by date a year after purchasing from the refrigerated section.

Banana Milk Taste Test

When it came to sampling this alt-milk, here are some of the things I noticed.

  • The color is darker than other non-dairy milks.
  • It smells like banana, considering that is the base of the milk, I would expect nothing less.
  • Has a very faint flavor of banana but the smell is very strong so the whole time I had the cup to my mouth I was expecting the banana flavor to be stronger.
  • The package says there is a hint of cinnamon but I did not pick up the cinnamon flavor in my taste test.
  • Thicker than other non-dairy milks but smooth.
  • Leaves a noticeable amount of residue on the side of the cup.

Uses for Mooala Banana Milk

I think some of the best ways I could use this banana milk include:

Mooala Oat Milk Review

A blue carton of Simple Oat Milk by Mooala.

Since the founder’s goal had been to create a simple plant-based alternative without added sugars or gums, I opted for the “Simple” line of products to conduct my review.

A glass of Mooala Simple Oat Milk is made from:

  • Filtered Water

  • Himalayan Pink Salt

The simple line of Mooala Oat Milk also carries labels of:

  • USDA Organic

It was recommended to use 7-10 days after opening and had a best by date of 12 months after the date of purchase.

Organic Mooala Simple Oat Milk Taste Test

After pouring and sampling a glass of this oat milk a few things I noticed include:

  • Particles floating in the milk. This could have been user error, maybe I just didn’t sake it well enough?
  • The particles weren’t noticeable when drinking, they were just off putting when you looked into the glass.
  • Smells like oats. Expected and nice to confirm that it smells like the key ingredient.
  • Has an interesting mouth feel. It’s smooth but it’s almost like it leaves a film in your mouth after sipping.
  • Leaves a little residue on the sides of the glass but not much.

How Would I use Mooala Oat Milk?

I would use this oat milk exactly as I use other oat milks. Some of my favorite ways include:

Mooala Organic Almond Milk

The final Mooala Milk I sampled was also from their simple line, Simple Almond Milk.

The ingredients were quite simply:

  • Filtered Water
  • Organic Almonds
  • Himalayan Pink Salt

Just like the oat milk, the Simple Almond Milk is labeled:

  • USDA Organic
  • No Gums
  • No Oils
  • No Fillers
  • Gluten Free
  • Parve

I also noticed that the package suggests use up to 7-10 days after opening. The best by date was 14 months from the date I purchased the product.

Mooala Simple Almond Milk Taste Test

After sampling a crisp glass of this simple Mooala Almond Milk I noticed a few things.

  • Unexpected smell, if I had to place it something akin to homemade play dough- salt and flour.
  • Did not notice any floating particles like the oat milk.
  • The taste was neutral. I didn’t detect any almond flavor, it was smooth without leaving a film feeling in your mouth like the oat milk
  • Leaves a thick residue on the side of the glass.

How would I use Mooala Organic Simple Almond Milk?

With its neutral taste and minimal almond flavor, this simple almond milk would work perfectly in place of dairy milk for just about anything. Personally I would use this milk in:

Final Thoughts and Reflections on Mooala’s Plant-Based Milks

What I Enjoyed About Mooala

  • The price. Compared to Malk which is made with simple organic ingredients as well, this product was noticeably cheaper. As of Feb 2026 it was half the price per ounce $5.13/ carton (roughly 11 cents per ounce) vs $6.07 (22 cents per ounce).
  • Simple ingredients. For the simple almond and oat milk options I really loved that there were no added ingredients beyond water, key ingredient, and salt.

What I Didn’t Like About Mooala

  • The flavor. I didn’t enjoy drinking any of the milks on their own. I am not usually one to just drink a glass of non-dairy milk but if I were going to pour a glass to go with a cookie, this would not be my choice.

Overall, this is probably not going to replace my go to dairy-free milk simply because I didn’t enjoy drinking these products plain. However, I would pick a carton of this milk up if my go-to is sold out.
