I am typically a hot coffee drinker. My first cup in the morning is always hot and almost always has to be re-heated half a dozen times (#toddlermomlife).

That said, my addiction to shaken espresso drinks in the afternoon has hit a complete fever pitch and has replaced my 3PM extra hot coffee for the foreseeable future.

One of the ways I have justified making these switch to a shaken espresso in the afternoon has been with the addition of chocolate protein powder. By adding a small boost of protein to my afternoon cup of joe I not only get the caffeine my body thinks it needs but also a little protein to keep me going until dinner.

Why We Love this Chocolate Protein Almond Milk Shaken Espresso

As if the combination of chocolate and espresso weren’t enough to sign you up for this daily chocolate pick me up, here are just a few more reasons to add this shaken espresso to your line up!

  • Minimal ingredients. Simply protein powder, espresso, maple syrup (optional), and almond milk.
  • Balanced mocha flavor. The chocolate doesn’t drown out the flavor of the espresso.
  • Extra protein. Depending on the protein powder you use you can add an extra 10 grams of protein in during your afternoon slump.

Vegan Changes to Chocolate Almond Milk Shaken Espresso

After looking over the Starbucks recipe for their chocolate almond milk shaken espresso I have made a few key swaps to keep this recipe vegan as well as simple.

  • Omit chocolate syrup. For starters I didn’t want to make a dairy-free chocolate syrup or have to store one on hand.
  • Use vegan chocolate protein powder. The protein powder adds the chocolate flavor and since I keep it on subscribe and save I am always looking for opportunities to use it.
  • Keep the almond milk. You can use any non-dairy milk but I like that the almond milk is one of the lower calorie options for plant-based milk so I can be a little more indulgent with the chocolate protein.

  • Chocolate Protein Powder– My go to protein powder has always been Orgain Creamy Chocolate.
  • Maple Syrup– Optional, but adds a boost of sweetness to the espresso.
  • Almond Milk– Used to top off the chocolate espresso.

Helpful Kitchen Tools

When it comes to making shaken espresso drinks at home, here are a few different kitchen tools you might find handy along the way.

  • Espresso Maker– This is the espresso maker we have at our home. It’s definitely a splurge and was my husbands med school graduation gift so if you don’t have this one here is a more budget and user friendly option.
  • Pod Based Espresso Maker– For a quicker shot of espresso.
  • Mason Jars– Used for everything under the sun and I truly hope you have a few already in your kitchen but if you need more (like we all do) then here you go!
