Silk Dairy-Free Heavy Whipping Cream Alternative Review

Silk Dairy-Free Heavy Whipping Cream Alternative is a plant-based replacement for heavy whipping cream. Read on to learn some of the pros, cons, and uses for this vegan and gluten-free heavy cream replacement in my personal review of this heavy whipping cream alternative.

I have been someone who has their go-to products for a while now. There are just some dairy-free ingredients I know work and I stick to those.

That said, I live in a small town where I am quite sure I am one of the few dairy-free people in the community and I have run into short supply of some of my favorite things.

This winter I experienced a shortage of my go-to whipping cream alternative and needed to test some new recipes. Instead of scrapping the plan or changing my recipe I decided it was high time to test out the other most common dairy-free whipping cream alternative.

Please note that these are not products sent to me or items I will earn any commissions on for the review. Simply put, this is a dairy-free product I tried, liked, and could see myself using time and again.

What is Silk Dairy-Free Heavy Whipping Cream Alternative?

The Silk brand has been at the forefront of the plant-based movement. Their first line of soy based products hit the shelves in the 70’s and they have expanded the line to include a number of plant based products since.

Silk is widely known for their plant-based beverages, yogurts, and creamers. In January of 2020, the company launched the first heavy whipping cream alternative available in the United States.

What We Like about Silk Heavy Whipping Cream Alternative

One of the main things I liked about this product was the fact that it was available when I was struggling to find my go-to. Here are a few of the reasons I enjoyed using it!

  • The texture. This was a thick and creamy product that dare I say was silky smooth.
  • Small list of ingredients. Compared to the other products on the market this whipped cream alternative uses fewer ingredients.
  • The screw top lid. This made it easy to pour and use smaller portions in things like soups.

What We Didn’t Like About Silk’s Alternative to Heavy Whipping Cream

While it was more readily available than my go-to there were a few things I didn’t enjoy about it.

  • The flavor. With coconut oil as the second ingredient, the coconut flavor heavily came through and I found myself having to compensate with other flavors to balance it out.
  • Whipped volume. While the package only contained about 1 ounce less than the container I usually pick up I felt like the whipped output was close to half that of the other brand I use.
  • Price. With an ounce less than the competitor I would have expected the price to reflect that but a carton of this heavy whipping cream will run about $5 (which is about $1 more than the other brand).

How Do You Use Silk Heavy Whipping Cream Alternative?

Currently my go-to use for heavy whipping cream alternatives is in no-churn vegan ice cream. That said, when I tested this product with my No Churn Cake Batter Ice Cream recipe the results were pretty disappointing.

As previously mentioned, the whipped volume was less than half of what I tend to get from the other brand. Not to mention, when frozen the ice cream was too solid to scoop, even after 10 minutes of softening time.

Personally I would not recommend using Silk’s Heavy Whipping Cream in my no churn recipes unless you enjoy hard to scoop ice cream that has about half the expected volume.

I would suggest using this product in soups and cream sauces but keep in mind the coconut flavor comes through pretty forcefully so use in recipes that a little coconut flavor won’t ruin the dish.

Some of my personal recipesI think do work with this heavy cream alternative include:

Final Thoughts and Reflections on Silk Dairy-Free Heavy Whipping Cream

Overall I was neutral to this product. I would buy it again if my go-to heavy cream is not available but I would not pick it over the other brand otherwise.
