Any other Great British Baking Show fans out there? During an especially sugary episode of GBB, the idea to make salted caramel materialized. The bakers were making anything and everything with sugar. Some turned sugar into decorative works of art while others drenched their bakes in golden caramel sauces.

Watching baker after baker make and play with sugar and caramel, I knew I must create a dairy-free version of this gooey salty goodness.

Since converting recipes has become the norm at the Life After Dairy household, I used a few trusted tricks to make a creamy caramel perfect for drizzling on McKay’s Sugar Cookies!

How to make Salted Caramel Sauce

Begin by heating 1/2 cup of granulated sugar in a sauce pan over medium low heat. Using a whisk stir the sugar slowly and often. The sugar will begin to clump at first, but continue whisking, it will begin melting.

Once the sugar melts into a liquid, add the vegan butter to the pan, one tablespoon at a time. The mixture will bubble as you add the butter, whisk it quickly after each addition.

After about 2 minutes, slowly whisk in the coconut milk. Once the coconut milk is entirely incorporated, cook for about a minute before removing from heat.

Remove the pan from heat and stir in the vanilla and salt. Allow the sauce to cool before using. It will thicken as it cools.

Dairy Free Changes

  • In place of regular butter, use vegan unsalted butter.
  • Replace heavy cream with a full fat coconut milk.

Pro Tips

Be patient. It takes some time for the granulated sugar to begin to melt. Continue stirring it to prevent the sugar from sticking to the pan or burning.
-Whisk the vegan butter in carefully. The mixture will bubble aggressively but once incorporated the mixture settles.
-Store the mixture in an airtight container in the fridge. Allow the mixture to warm up when you remove it from the fridge before use.
