When The Laughing Cow company launched their plant-based alternative I knew I needed to bring back the cheese plate dinner. Read on to see how these dairy-free cheese wedges stacked up.

What We Like about The Plant-Based Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges

Some of the reasons we liked this plant-based cheese alternative include:

  • Low calorie snack. Each of the wedges are 35 calories.
  • Easy portable snack. With individual packaging for each wedge makes this a great snack to pack and take on the go.
  • Noticeable flavor in the garlic and herb wedges. It reminded me of the flavor in the Dairy-Free Boursin Cheese Flavor.
  • Decent sale prices. I can often find these wedges on sale for about $4 for a pack of 8 making each wedge about 50 cents.

What We Didn’t Like about The Plant-Based Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges

While there were some qualities about these cheese alternative wedges we liked, there were a few things we weren’t too crazy about.

  • Minimal flavor on in the Original. While the garlic and herb wedges packed in some flavor, the original really left a lot to be desired.
  • Not easily spreadable. One of the things I loved about the dairy-filled laughing cow cheeses were how spreadable they were. The dairy-free alternative missed the mark a bit with this, they needed to be at room temperature and I felt like I basically pressed the cheese alternative onto the cracker more than spread it and the consistency was a bit crumbly.

How to Use the Laughing Cow Plant-Based Cheese Wedges

Unlike with the dairy-filled original laughing cow wedges, these plant-based ones did not strike me as a stand along snack option. I felt like they were better when paired with something else.

Here are a few different ways we used the cheese wedges while we sampled them.

  • Breakfast style cheese toast. I would take a slice of toast, smash one of the wedges on the toast and then top with bacon and eggs for breakfast.
  • Grilled cheese. Using plant butter, butter one side of bread, smash the laughing cow cheese wedge (honestly 2 is the way to go) on the other side, then place another slice bread buttered with plant butter. Cook on the skillet both sides, until desired level of crispy. Serve with homemade tomato soup.
  • Margherita crackers. Use a plain cracker- like a water cracker, smash the cheese on top, top with basil and sliced grape tomatoes sprinkle with salt and enjoy!

Is laughing cow spreadable plant-based cheese gluten-free?

The Laughing Cow Brand states all of their spreadable cheeses, including the plant-based one, are made without gluten-containing ingredients. That said, they are not tested for gluten and are not labeled gluten-free.

Final Thoughts and Reflections on the Plant-Based Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges

Honestly I don’t see these cheese wedges becoming a staple in my dairy-free cheese drawer. While I enjoyed the garlic and herbs flavor, the original simply didn’t do it for me.

I also found myself leaning on other ingredients to make the cheese wedges better. While I enjoyed using them, they will probably be an infrequent addition to our grocery order.
