How to Make Oreo Rice Krispie Treats
Ingredients You’ll Need
For a dairy-free batch of Oreo Rice Krispie Treats, here are the ingredients you’ll need. If you are looking to take this recipe to a completely vegan treat, see my suggestions below for an additional vegan swap.
- Plant-based Butter– You can also swap out the plant-based butter for coconut oil but if you are looking for a dairy-free and nut-free option, you might consider Country Crock’s Plant-Butter.
- Marshmallows– For a fully vegan Rice Krispie treat experience, try using Dandies Marshmallows. They are slightly flavored with vanilla and melt into a gooey and delicious pool for the perfect Rice Krispie.
- Vanilla– Just a splash helps keep these Rice Krispies ultra flavorful.
- Flaky Sea Salt– Balances out the sweetness of the Rice Krispie treats.
- Rice Krispie Cereal– Gives these treats the iconic crunch.
- Oreos– Crushed to your desired size, these chocolaty cookies add the perfect flavor of cookies and cream.
Directions
- Melt plant-butter. In a large pot, melt vegan butter.
- Stir in marshmallows. Once melted, add the vegan marshmallows. Stirring constantly, melt the marshmallows until mostly melted through. (The consistency should be mostly melted with just a few lumps)
- Add salt and vanilla. Remove from heat and stir in salt and vanilla quickly.
- Mix in cereal. Pour in the rice Krispie cereal and turn to coat evenly with the melted marshmallow mixture.
- Stir in Oreos. Next add the crushed Oreos and stir to evenly distribute into the rice krispie treats.
- Pour into an 8X8-inch baking dish and press the top to a flat and even finish.
- Cool and cut. Allow to cool about 30 minutes before slicing in and enjoying!
How to Crush Oreos for Cookies and Cream Rice Krispie Treats
Getting that cookies and cream flavor takes a little work breaking up the Oreo cookies to your desired size. Here are some common ways to crush Oreos for the perfect ratio of gooey Rice Krispie to chocolaty cookie.
- Pulse in a food proccessor until they are the desired size.
- Stick in a gallon ziplock bag and roll with a rolling pin.
- Crumble with your hands.
Dairy-Free and Vegan Changes to Oreo Rice Krispie Treats
If you are wondering how these delicious and addictive Rice Krispie treats are dairy-free or are looking at turning them into an entirely vegan treat, here are the swaps you will want to make.
- Vegan Butter– A plant-based butter such as Country Crock’s Plant Butter sticks works perfectly in this recipe.
- Dandies Marshmallows– These vegan marshmallows keep the Rice Krispie treats gooey and vegan!
- Oreos– Naturally dairy-free and vegan these addictive cookies are the perfect addition to make cookies and cream treats.
- Rice Krispie Cereal– The Kellogg’s brand Rice Krispie cereal is not a vegan ingredient. In order to keep these treats vegan you will want to swap them out for a vegan cereal such as Nature’s Path Crispy Rice Cereal.
Rice Krispie Treat FAQs
Why are my Rice Krispie Treats not crispy?
A few reasons contribute to Rice Krispie treats without a crunch. For starters, if you are working with a previously opened box of rice krispie cereal they might have gone stale and lack the iconic crunch. While the treats will still be delicious, they just won’t be very crunchy.
Another reason your treats might not be ultra-crispy is how you store them. If they are left out and open they won’t stay crispy beyond a day. I suggest keeping them in an airtight container to prevent them getting stale.
How do you store Rice Krispie Treats?
Freshly made Rice Krispie treats keep well in an air-tight container for up to 5 days (not that these will still be on your counter then).
