Step-by-Step Directions for Vegan Chocolate Dipped Banana Slices

  • Heat water: Heat a small saucepan with water over low heat.
  • Make double broiler: Place a small glass bowl over the saucepan (do not let the bowl touch the water, if it touches the water, pour water out of the saucepan before you continue).
  • Add chocolate: In the small glass bowl, add dairy-free chocolate chips and coconut oil to the glass bowl.
  • Melt: Stir and melt the chocolate over low heat.
  • Slice: While the chocolate is melting, slice bananas into 1/2 inch thick disks and chop any toppings to prepare for sprinkling over the top.
  • Dip bananas: Once the chocolate is melted, turn off the heat and begin dipping the banana slices in the melted chocolate.
  • Tap the dipped banana to shake off extra chocolate and transfer to a sheet of parchment paper.
  • Continue coating the banana slices with chocolate until all of the slices are coated. You will have extra chocolate for dipping.
  • Top + Freeze: Sprinkle each of the chocolate coated banana slices with your desired toppings and place the parchment paper on a baking sheet and transfer to the freezer for at least 3 hours to set.
  • Store: Once frozen, move the chocolate dipped banana slices to a freezer-safe storage container and store up to 3 months.

What Do I Do with Extra Dipping Chocolate?

During my various rounds of testing for this recipe I noticed the dipping chocolate would seize up after the third banana. Dipping chocolate will seize up when it comes into contact with moisture.

In this case the humid south during summer as well as the slick exterior of the bananas both add a level of moisture with which the dipping chocolate could not compete. If you find your chocolate hasn’t seized up after the third banana you can always push your luck for a fourth.

Some other strategies I use for extra dipping chocolate include:

  • Spreading on graham crackers and topping with marshmallows.
  • Pouring the leftover chocolate on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and topping with nuts to make homemade chocolate bark.
  • Spooning over a bowl of vegan ice cream.
