My love affair with beer bread came from a craving, as all good recipes here are My Life After Dairy typically begin. I had a hankering for bread that would not wait for yeast rising and dough-kneading. I wanted bread and I wanted it hours ago! As I came to terms with the need to make a bread and fast I began searching savory quick bread. This lead to hunger pains and the discovery of beer bread.

Unlike traditional yeasted breads this tender, savory beer bread recipe relies on the yeast in beer to react with the baking powder to leaven the dough and make a delicate bread perfect for snacking on!

How to Make Cheddar and Onion Beer Bread

Ingredients

The base of the beer bread contains 5 ingredients making this truly the best quick bread recipe. Most of these ingredients are pantry staples you probably already have on hand. For the beer bread base you will need:

Ingredients for the cheddar and onion beer bread on a wooden counter.

Flour- The gluteny goodness that truly takes bread to the next level. I used an all-purpose flour in this recipe.
Baking Powder- This ingredient helps the dough rise into a beautiful loaf without adding in a packet of yeast.
Salt- Trust me on this one, you do not want to skip the salt. This takes the bread to a whole different level.
Honey- Makes the loaf a little sweeter.
Beer- Also used as a leavening agent in this quick bread. I used a very basic beer (read- Coors) to make this delicious bread.
Plant-Based Butter- Dollop some pats of vegan butter along the top of the unbaked dough for a buttery, salty finish you will be dreaming about for days to come!

The added goodness that takes this beer bread loaf to the next level are:
Cheddar Cheese- Violife cheddar shreds ALL THE WAY! I seriously might have an addiction to this vegan cheese source and I am not giving it up anytime soon.
Green Onion- Chopped all the way to the base.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375°F and prepare a 9X5 loaf pan by spraying with a non-stick spray or coating with vegan butter. Set aside until later.

In a large mixing bowl stir together 3 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 cup Violife cheddar cheese shreds (or another dairy-free cheese shred) and 1/2 cup chopped green onion.

Once throughly stirred, pour a 12 oz beer and 1/4 cup honey over the flour mixture. Stir the honey and beer into the flour until combined.

Transfer the bread dough into the loaf pan and top with 4 tablespoons of vegan or plant-based butter, sliced into slivers and sprinkle a little sea salt on top.

Bake for 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Serve with a slather of vegan butter, with a bowl of chili, or just much on it every time you walk into the kitchen.

Dairy-Free Changes to Cheddar and Onion Beer Bread

Each slice of this sinfully delicious quick bread contains two main dairy-free changes. To make this beer bread dairy-free:

-Use a dairy-free cheese shred. I used Violife Cheddar in this cheesy bread. Seriously the best dairy-free cheese sub I have found so far.
-Top the bread dough with plant-based butter to give each bite a slightly salty buttery finish.
